Research has proven that culturally relevant materials engage student interest. We understand that athletics is a popular topic with African American males and we have included five current college students in the workbook, four are student-athletes. We also have four former NFL players in the book. The workbook is designed to improve critical thinking skills, improve fact extraction from a piece that has been read, connect the materials to the students lives with personal goals and finally exercises for writing complete essays. We actively engage the students and then using the steps in the writing process have them put the process into action.
